Recent Work: Modern Flapper

Here's a look I styled for Beaute Social with Dollface by Jules and Dylan Wilson Photography. We had so much fun doing a modern update on a 1920s flapper look and our model Lucia totally worked it!  P.S.- The feather toque hat was an estate sale find for a steal!  :)

Recent Work: Vintage Glamour

Hi Guys!
I wanted to share with you some of my work from a recent project I've been working on. It's part of a new business venture- Beaute Socials- with makeup by Jules of Dollface By Jules and photography by my husband Dylan.  It's a one-stop destination for glamorous beauty portraits & vintage inspirations- we have makeup/hair/wardrobe/photography in one studio located in downtown Savannah. Below is a look I styled that features 20's and 50's inspirations brought up to date. The thing I love most is that almost all of the pieces are thrifted!

Flapper Look:
Pale pink dress- H&M clearance
Beaded bolero- Charlotte Russe clearance
Headband- custom made by me
Fan- Asian Festival
Shoes- given to me

Fifties Look:
Dress- thrifted
Gloves- antique find (gift)

Stay tuned for more looks!

1920s Hat Box

Here are some thrifted hat finds along with a vintage hat box from the 1920s- a thrift find my Aunt Sandy found and gifted me. (I know this because there was a newspaper fragment in the bottom of the box that dated from the 20s). What a find!

Vintage Vogue Covers

Spied these vintage teens and twenties Vogue magazine covers at my new favorite antique store, Wright Square Antique Mall  (walking distance from me ;) and had to snap some photos...

This dark-eyed 1927 beauty in creme is my favorite and I'm considering going back for her! She's modeling the iconic 20's makeup look- pencil thin expressive eyebrows, heavily made up eyes, circle-blushed cheeks and red cupids bow lips.

Loving the colors and florals in this 1910s cover look! In particular, I'd like to have the middle look in my closet- shoes and all. Love the blue and gold and all the trims and texture going on in her outfit!

Love the excessive exoticism in this 1917 cover look. From her headdress, to the shape and print of the dress, down to the trims of her riticule purse and pointed red slippers- Poiret's oriental influence abounds!

What an inspiring image of summer... Love the face-framing hat worn by this twenties beauty sipping her drink through bee stung lips! Twenties hats such as this one and the popular cloche (helmet-like style) were all about framing the face in order to show off the dramatic makeup and sleek bobs that were so fashionable.

This 1911 cover is my other favorite. I love the turquoise/red color combination and of course the drama of that mile long feather in her turban! Another strong example of the exotic and orientalist influences that so defined fashions of the 1910s.

Which is your favorite?

-Jenn

What I Wore Wednesday

Was feeling kind of 20s today...

Having to wear all black to work requires some imagination when getting dressed if you don't want to find yourself stuck in your typical "uniform" of black pants and top!

This is when things started to get pretty interesting.....
Yeah.....things can get really silly when your trying to model and you're NOT one, and you don't know what to do!

Details:
Top- thrifted
Skirt- vintage (gift from Fran Prince)
Earrings- vintage art deco clip-ons (Mary Parker Antiques)
Headband- stolen from Heather Snover
Riticule purse- vintage (gift)
Thigh highs- Fredericks
T-strap heels- Madden Girl @DSW

Style in "Singing in the Rain"

I had the opportunity to style a photo/video shoot this past Tuesday (I will definitely share pics when they come out).  A bit of the inspiration was the 1952 film Singing in the Rain starring Gene Kelly,  Donald O'Connor, Deborah Reynolds and Jean Hagen. If you recall, it's the story of a silent film company and their stars transition to films with sound (talkies). By the way, the first silent film was The Jazz Singer- made in 1927. Not only is it incredibly entertaining, the costumes alone are a feast for the eyes! For one, there are so many of them! Secondly, they represent a variety of styles of the 1920s, as this is the period the film is set in. For now, I wanted to share some of my favorite costumes in the film...
I totally LOVE this look Jean Hagen is rocking here. Total super villian- Cruella Deville anyone??? This look is totally my style. Love the strong color contrast and sunglasses!

One of the best scenes includes a fashion showcase (shown below) of a variety of 1920s styles for every imaginable occasion. This is a must-see.... I love the way its commentated too! Click HERE to watch the clip (not long) and worth it!
Too much to say here! My favorites are pic #1 of the lounging pajamas, #4 red chevron fringe dress, and #5 with the bathing outfit and parasol.  The red image- with her fabric draped over her arm- reminds me of something similar I did for the shoot.

I'm in love with the trailing fabric here in this dance scene. Great inspiration for a photo shoot!

Love the male fashion here- all white with his sweater vest and black/white spectator shoes!

All decked out in glimmering silvery whites-color coordinated with pale hair and fur. Reminds me of a later screen siren-30s star Jean Harlow.

There's even a glimpse of late 18th century frivolous fashions in the scenes where they are filming the talkie!

So we've got a 1950s film featuring fashions of the 1920s along with a little glimpse of 18th century!

There are so many other gorgeous costumes, but unfortunately they are hard to find images of.
If you watch this, look out for some of the other favorites:

-Jean's all pale pink beach pajama outfit (including matching turban)
- Jean's monochromatic look in all white
-All the fashions that are literally flying by in the modern dance scene
