Refashion Rescue: Vintage Hand Mirror

I picked up a vintage hand mirror recently for $2 while out thrifting. I was excited because I had been wanting a mirror to use functionally to see the back of my hair (since I never look at it!) Instead of going out and buying a cheap mirror at the drugstore I decided to wait for something pretty (and vintage) to catch my eye! However, thanks to the thrift store's method of pricing- when I took the clear tape off it also removed some of the design. I figured that was just a good excuse to embellish my mirror.... so here's what I did.

Supplies:
  • Hand mirror
  • Krylon silver foil metallic spray paint (or whatever color you prefer)
  • Cosmetic wedge sponge
  • Super glue adhesive
  • Old brooch (this was actually a cheapy necklace pendant and was a bright blue color)

Steps:
  • In order to get your brooch color to mesh with your design, spray some of the spray paint onto the sponge and press onto the part of your jewel that you want to cover. Continue until you get the desired look, letting the paint dry a few minutes in between applications.
  • Apply your adhesive to the back of your brooch and press onto the center of your mirror.
  • Enjoy gazing at yourself in your new jeweled vintage hand mirror :)

Statement Piece: Palazzo Pants

I had fun showcasing my thrifted palazzo pants for this look! I'm all about great pants and find myself more and more these days on the lookout for pants that are loungey/printed/high waisted/fun! I paired these pants with neutral autumnal tones to bring it into fall and played with a few different accessories for varying impact. Oh- be sure to check out how awesome the back is in the last photo! You literally step into these and then tie them up at your waist- its the coolest thing!

Recent Work: Modern Flapper

Here's a look I styled for Beaute Social with Dollface by Jules and Dylan Wilson Photography. We had so much fun doing a modern update on a 1920s flapper look and our model Lucia totally worked it!  P.S.- The feather toque hat was an estate sale find for a steal!  :)

Time Traveling & Print-Mixing

Here's an entirely thrifted vintage-inspired outfit I put together for some fun shots with this neighboring 1965 Ford Galaxie! I'm a big fan of mixing prints and colors so this was fun. Notice the size of the prints are different (larger print on dress versus smaller print on coat) so it works well together and doesn't conflict.

Flights of Fabric

Found this huge bit of fabric for $1 while out thrifting recently. It's so 80s with the garish coloring, and abstract shapes framing the flowers, however- I was seeing more 1910s orientalism. Plus, the weight of it told me that I could wear it draped like a sari or shawl. It was windy so I ran outside a mess in my house dress and flip flops to see what it would do...

Rest assured, there will be a photo-op in the near future with proper makeup, ensemble, and maybe even hair styling (don't hold me to the last one though!).

(No Sew) Refashion a Kids Dress into an Apron

I spied the most gorgeous little girls dress recently while thrifting with my Aunt Sandy and since I have no little girl to wear it, we thought it would be oh so easy to turn into an apron.
You want to look for these full-skirted dresses that already have a sash to tie in the back. Just check the zipper placement to be sure it can be cut where you want to.

All I did was:
1. Waited for my husband to be gone.
2. Got fabric scissors and cut the skirt off.
3. Tied it on and swirled around like mad, imagining myself as a 50s housewife.

If you know how to sew then you can figure out how to do this even better! A tip is to watch the size- we found another cute dress but it was too small to make a proper apron- just hold the skirt up to you and tie on and check that it covers the front enough. If your wondering, my dress was a size 6x.

There are so many dress options out there that would make darling aprons. We spied floral prints, frills, flounces, and beautiful taffeta plaids that would transport you into a gorgeous holiday hostess circa 1952!

Have you any other ideas or past projects for refashioning children's clothing?

Yard Sale Fashion Finds!

I went yard-saling yesterday in a serious way (aren't most yard-salers pretty serious about it??) My dad went along with me- we started at 7:45 am and didn't stop until he made me!!! How considerate of me! Here's what I got...

  • The softest 3 piece vintage pj set- $1 (the top may become my new favorite shirt!)
  • Parasol (small torn slit but do I care for 25 cents??)
  • Vintage seafoam nightie - 50 cents
  • Lace doily etched dish -free gift with purchase (love this for organizing toiletries on bathroom sink)
  • White satiny fabric I plan to drape as a skirt and puddle to the floor 30s style- 50 cents
  • Petticoat -$4
  • Asymmetrical lacy valence I will likely wear as a sarong- 25 cents
  • Sweet pink & blue vintage bed jackets- $1 each
  • Feather toque hat (so 1910s)- $10 splurge
  • Flapper style dress- $2
  • Blue straw hat with upturned brim- $1
So, I think I just found a reason to wake up early on Saturdays. And thats saying a lot if you know me!

Tour de Thrift

I was working a makeup event recently in the Charleston, SC area, when one of my clients shared her favorite local thrift haunt. So, of course, I had to do a run thru and check it out after work!

So hang on to your wallets, strap on your fanny packs, and get ready for a virtual thrift tour of Goodwill in Mount Pleasant, SC...

This wall art would have been mine if it weren't for all those cats!

Need a lamp anyone???

Lots of great florals.

I was looking for the price of this globe somewhere around China when I noticed they actually used a hanging price tag. How considerate!

More fun wall art.

This floral peignoir robe was a little too 70s for me.

Some clothing items I had to leave behind due to size (I was really swooning over the yellow, Asian-inspired jacket!).

Has anyone ever seen a Goodwill merchandised like a boutique?

It's raining cats! Here's a giant bed pillow for a cat lover.

Love this colorful appetizer tray featuring fun 60s fashions.

There was an entire shelf of masks! I would have scooped up a few if it weren't for the price.

Here's the one thing that I had to take home with me:

Note to self: this does not fall under the category of knick-nack as prohibited by husband. It hangs on the wall or I can borrow her feathers to festoon a hat!

Award for the ugliest item goes to these wolf brothers slippers!

Yes, they are both sporting matching red bandanas and fangs. Yikes!

Overall thoughts:

Clean and organized + loads of better brands and designer labels + great selection = higher prices than your average but still worth browsing for must haves.

Happy thrifting!
